How to Photograph Bento to Look Delicious — Color and the Overhead Shot

Published Jun 27, 2026

Bento-photo example: shot level from straight overhead, arranged with good color.

Bento is all about color and packing, but it tends to come out “brown and dull” or “busy.” The causes are angle, color, packing and brightness. Even on a phone, an overhead composition and a little color transform it.

Shoot flat bento level from straight overhead

A flat-packed bento, shot from an angle, distorts the lid edge and the sides in back and looks busy. Shot from straight overhead, the whole thing is laid out and tidy. Level it with the grid or on-screen level for a straight, clean shot (→ How to use grid lines / Fixing a tilted photo).

Add green, red and yellow color

Lots of brown sides look dull. Just a little green (broccoli, shiso, edamame), red (cherry tomato, pickled plum) and yellow (egg) makes it far livelier. Separating colors with dividers or cups looks tidy.

Raise the brightness a notch

Shoot at a bright window right after opening the lid to bring out the gloss of the rice and sides. When it’s dark, tap the screen then swipe up to raise the brightness a notch (→ Exposure compensation basics).

Composition tips

Beyond the overhead shot of the whole, also take a frame moving in a little on the star side dish for variety. Place the bento box at center, or shift it slightly to an intersection so the space comes alive (→ Rule of thirds). General food tips apply too (→ Food photography).

Bento before/after. Left: angled, brown, dull. Right: overhead, level, colorful.
The same bento, angled and dull → overhead, level, colorful

Start with just this

Flat bento level from straight overhead, add three colors, and raise the brightness a notch. That cuts down a lot of “dull and busy” in bento.

FAQ

Is overhead the best angle for bento?

Yes. A flat-packed bento, shot level from straight overhead, keeps the lid edge and the sides undistorted and reads cleanly. Level it with the on-screen level or grid for a straight, tidy shot.

It looks brown and dull.

Add a little green (broccoli, shiso), red (cherry tomato, pickled plum) and yellow (egg) for color. Raising the brightness a notch makes the rice and sides look brighter and more appetizing.
